I’m really stoked for 9, and it’s not the sort of film I usually get stoked for. I have an immense appreciation for what Brad Bird has done with animated film (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille), enjoy most Pixar flicks and think that Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a feat that will never be accomplished again in terms of overall execution. But beyond those things, I really don’t like most animated features. Too much cartoon, not enough consequence.
But 9 really looks to have a story with a lot of consequence, and it has all the right people associated with it. Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) are producing, the creator/director of the original short film that inspired 9 (which can be seen here) is directing and an A-list of stars from Frodo to the always-great John C. Reilly are lending their voices to the nine rag dolls. The action looks top-notch, the animation is stunning and chances are there’s probably some compelling reason to discuss the movie after viewing it. I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic movies, so they had me at “end of the world”, but I would hope that everyone starts to pay attention to the massive amount of potential this film has.
