To get you ready for the real Christmas present.
Robert Downey Jr. is reason enough to see this. But the rest of the cast is also superb (Jude Law per usual beginning an ‘on’ year for movies again, always-hot Rachel McAdams and rising star Mark Strong rounding it out) and it will be interesting, to say the least, to see what direction director Guy Ritchie takes this franchise reboot.
Ritchie, of course, is the much-ballyhooed director of Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. His last offering, RockNRolla, was a love-it-or-hate-it beginning to its own trilogy of movies, which Ritchie will continue after ‘Holmes’. And Ritchie’s two films preceeding that (Revolver, Swept Away) were unbelievably awful. So you never know what you’re going to get with Ritchie at the helm. Especially now that one of his films seems to finally be deviating from the Cockney organized crime scene.
Personally, I think Ritchie is a good choice. Yeah, some of his offerings have been bottom-of-the-barrel bad. But his best three films are dripping with style, and with a story like Sherlock Holmes, style would be much appreciated. Hopefully he’s learned from past mistakes and will offer a discernable plot (some of his films are just so cluttered and full of wink-nod-backstabs that they’re near-impossible for the majority of the audience to follow) with fleshed-out characters. My favorite touch in Ritchie films is the obligatory slanted or object-mounted camera angle, and from the trailer, some of that looks to be employed here. It just looks cool.
Sherlock Holmes hits theaters this Christmas. I’ll be there for sure.
